The other day I was suprisingly invited to attend the Internet & Technology dinner at the The Mansion House organised by The City of London Corporation, The Lord Mayor’s Technology Advisory Group and The Internet Society, and attended by the Rt. Hon The Lord Mayor and The Lady Mayoress Alderman David Brewer CMG. It was a black tie affair that took place last night and so, I write this in a very hungover state. A packet of Hula Hoops (or Hangover Hoops as I like to call them) together with a can of coke has pulled me out of my bin bag state and allowed me to see as I type.
It was an interesting experience, The Mansion House is an amazing place – one of the grandest town palaces in London and the night was full of traditional wierdness, a lot of toasts to various people, sherif’s (yes, sherif’s), the royal family and the internet – this is probably why I’m so hungover?!. There were some interesting people and it was good to see that everyone was up for making London a ‘Cyber City’ as they liked to call it.
The highlight of the evening was a video message from Vint Cerf, a Founding Father of the Internet and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google. He’s quite a charasmatic guy and also looks a bit like Santa Claus, which is a bonus. The main point of his message was that he feels that London is one of the leading cities in technology and the internet, and wanted to encourage everyone to keep it up and help advance the internet.
I also discovered an interesting fact – London (Zone 1 I think?!) will soon be completely Wi-fi’d up. Therefore, you’ll be able to sit in a park and browse the internet for free – now won’t that be good?!
